چکیده

1. Adult dogs maintained for 6 weeks upon a carrot-protein-deficient diet exhibited a progressive fall in the serum protein confined entirely to the albumin fraction. The degree of hypoalbuminemia was pronounced, i.e. a fall from 3.75 to 2.00 gm. per cent. 2. Parallel microscopic changes in the liver were observed which consisted of a gradual loss in the stainable cytoplasm producing extensive vacuolization. This vacuolization was not due to the accumulation of fat or of glycogen as shown by chemical analyses as well as by stained sections of the livers. 3. The histological changes in the livers were assumed to be due to a loss of protein inasmuch as there was a parallel fall in the protein content of the liver pari passu with the fall in the serum albumin of the blood. This assumption is made more probable by the fact that the water content of the liver increased as the protein content decreased. 4. Liver function, as measured by the excretion of iso-iodeikon, fell with the fall of the serum albumin thus indicating the production of hepatic insufficiency by the protein deficient diet. 5. These observations are discussed in relation to the question whether the liver is the site of formation or of storage of serum albumin. Certain other, particularly therapeutic, implications are also discussed, i.e. the importance of a high protein intake in patients with liver disease.

Hypoalbuminemia as a Predictor for Complications Following Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

Background and purpose: There is little information about the prognostic role of preoperative serum albumin levels in postoperative outcomes following coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The aim of this study was to evaluate preoperative hypoalbuminemia as a predictor for complications after CABG. Materials and methods: This prospective observational study was conducted in 200 patients und...

Studies on Hypoalbuminemia Produced by Protein-deficient Diets

Serum albumin depletion, induced by a 3 weeks fast, was completely corrected within 1 week by the ingestion of a diet consisting solely of meat administered ad libitum. The average protein intake was 50 gm. per kilo of body weight per day. A 2nd week of the same diet produced no further increase in serum albumin though it did lead to an increase in the globulin fraction.

Reduction of hyperlipidemia and proteinuria without growth retardation in nephritic rats by a methionine-supplemented, low-soy-protein diet.

Effect of a low-soy-protein-isolate (SPI) diet supplemented with methionine on hyperlipidemia, proteinuria, and hypoalbuminemia was studied in rats with nephrotoxic serum nephritis (NSN). Rats were fed experimental diets for 14 d after an injection of nephrotoxic serum. An 8.5%-SPI diet (8.5S), as compared with a basal 20%-SPI diet (20S), improved the hyperlipidemia, proteinura, and hypoalbumin...

Increased albumin plasma efflux contributes to hypoalbuminemia only during early phase of sepsis in rats.

The mechanisms leading to hypoalbuminemia in sepsis were explored by measuring plasma volume, albumin distribution, plasma albumin transcapillary escape rate (TER), and efflux (TER x albumin intravascular pool). These parameters were quantified in infected rats, injected intravenously with live Escherichia coli, and pair-fed and well-fed rats using an injection of (35)S-albumin and measuring pl...

Higher Risk of Developing Peptic Ulcer Bleeding in Adult Patients Diagnosed with Hypoalbuminemia

Aim: To evaluate whether patients diagnosed with hypoalbuminemia have higher risk of developing peptic ulcer bleeding (PUB). Background: Low serum albumin levels are particularly common in critically ill patients. Life-threatening upper gastrointestinal (UGI) hemorrhage is a stress-related mucosal injury or stress ulceration in critically ill patients. Patients and methods: We conducted a retro...

Albumin in Health and Disease: Causes and Treatment of Hypoalbuminemia*

When disease leads to moderate or severe hypoalbuminemia (i.e., albumin <2 mg/dl), detrimental consequences may influence the clinical course and negatively impact the prognosis. In fact, multiple human studies and a few veterinary ones have shown hypoalbuminemia to be correlated with a poorer prognosis. Treatment considerations for hypoalbuminemic patients should address the consequences and c...
